I am receiving my MA in Linguistics later this year. This comes 30 years after earning my last graduate degree, which was in Economics. I'm very concerned about finding even greater difficulties getting hired at my age, although I have exceptional grades and references.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520807396714463309.post-69146381163989939912014-09-19T14:09:46.533-04:002014-09-19T14:09:46.533-04:00My experience goes on to working with a Google ven...My experience goes on to working with a Google vendor to provide lingusitic review services. Based in Ireland they are scared to pass on their views to Indian lingusitic lead who happens to speak another language but knows nothing about the language that I was reviewing. The lady decided to fire me as she emailed me an incorrect translation and when i corrected that she took offence and requested the company in Ireland to get rid of me to massage her ego. As much as they were happy with my services they had no option but to mail me a pink slip. Beside the favoritism is such that only one reviewer for the language paid English - Hindi is passed on most of the work despite his snob value, late deliverable and unprofessionalism. Such a pity, a company spending millions on localization is doing such a poor job in regard to one of the most important asian languages. Atleast Google Indian office deserves a better language lead in India...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520807396714463309.post-3516532638119949782014-09-02T09:11:15.101-04:002014-09-02T09:11:15.101-04:00G - thanks for the feedback. My day job is at Seattle Children's Hospital, working on their Web site, and I had a book published last year. I also write for a regional online newspaper. There are whole sites dedicated to listing examples and answers. It kind of reminds me of a time when I was interviewing at a tech company before I became a linguist, where the interview questions were always little puzzles that I found both easy and somewhat interesting, but I knew couldn't have anything to do with the job itself. Luckily, I found myself in the same position as you, never hearing back, and instead of being rich, I'm now a grad student. Wait... crap.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520807396714463309.post-7772643032024078042011-04-11T12:01:55.830-04:002011-04-11T12:01:55.830-04:00Thanks for the post. Maybe they're more on the 'thinking' side of the issues? But I would imagine having a proper experimental linguist would be useful, you could run experiments on page/ad mismatch responses, maybe even trick people into thinking that a page and ad are well-matched when they're only slightly similar.

-CoffeeNWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12626377419233860251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520807396714463309.post-77511470808496884192011-04-11T11:40:10.476-04:002011-04-11T11:40:10.476-04:00I think an MA is perfect for industry. I think as that technology matures and multi-lingual needs arise, linguists will be in greater demand. I just graduated with an MA in Linguistics, and it seems like there's little else for me to do but go on to a PhD, and even after that it looks like job pickings are pretty slim. And I already work full-time outside academia and have a family to support, which makes the PhD route seemingly impossible for me to manage... but maybe, just maybe there's something out there for a wayward linguistics MA!D.
